SPARTAN BASEBALL—2008/09
CASE 9, WASHINGTON 1...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 26, 2009) - Sophomore catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA-pictured) went 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team defeated Washington University for the second time this season, this time by a score of 9-1 at the University of Chicago.
The Spartans scored early and often, with at least one run in each of the first four innings. They scored one run in the first inning without any hits, as freshman center fielder Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, CA) led off the game with a walk and would score on an error. Case scored three runs in the second, on a bases-loaded hit by pitch by freshman third baseman Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA) and a two-run single by sophomore first baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH). They added one in the third on a sacrifice fly by Richards. Bills drove in two in the fourth with a single and had a two-run double in the sixth, extending the Case lead to 9-0. The Bears scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, but could not score any more.
Mullins finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman second baseman Jamal Abed (Westlake, OH) reached four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Mullins, Bills, sophomore designated hitter Cory Pecoraro (Strongsville, OH), and freshman left fielder Jackson Stone (Arlington, TX) all hit doubles in the game.
Senior starting pitcher Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) went the distance for his second complete game of the season, and bringing his record to 5-7. He gave up one unearned run on five hits and one walk, notching four strikeouts.
