SPARTAN FOOTBALL CLAIMS TWO, MEN'S SOCCER ONE, UAA AOW...

CLEVELAND, OH (October 27, 2009) - Case Western Reserve University fall sport teams recorded a University Athletic Association (UAA) hatrick for the week of October 19-25 as three Spartans brought home Athlete of the Week (AOW) honors in their respective sports.  The announcement was made on the UAA website.

The football team, currently ranked No. 8 in the nation by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), has received 11 AOW honors this season.  This week, junior kicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH-pictured) earned his fourth consecutive special teams AOW and senior defensive back Brad Paramore (Garfield Heights, OH) claimed his first defensive AOW.nice

Paramore had two first half interceptions, including one for a touchdown, in a 63-14 win over Hiram College.   The Spartans led 42-0 at halftime.  Paramore had a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown to put the Spartans up 17-0 in the first quarter and added another pick, which led to a touchdown, in the second quarter.

Coffey fought strong winds against Hiram as he went two-for-two on field goals and converted seven extra points in the win.  Coffey converted a 31-yard field goal to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter and booted a 24-yarder in the second quarter. Coffey also kicked off 11 times for an average of 57.5 yards and a touchback.

Case Western Reserve’s third UAA honor came in men’s soccer as junior defender Ryan Michols (Glenview, IL) was named the co-defensive AOW.  Michols played solid all-around defense in a 3-0 win over Penn-State Behrend College Friday.  The Spartans only allowed six shots and one shot on goal in the victory.  It was the Spartans second AOW of the year in men’s soccer.
