Brown and Coffey Repeat as UAA AThLETE OF THE WEEK; Football Up to Ninth

CLEVELAND, OH (October 20, 2009) - The Case Western Reserve University football team had two players named University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week (AOW) for the week of October 12-18. The announcement was made of the UAA website.

Senior linebacker Jeff Brown (North Olmsted, OH ~ left) was named football's defensive player of the week and junior kicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH ~ right) took football’s special teams honor. This is the third straight week Coffey has been honored and the second straight award for Brown.

The No. 9-ranked Spartan football team is off to a 6-0 (0-0 UAA) start and has won 27 straight regular season games.

Brown had a team-high 8.5 tackles in a 55-7 win over Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday.   Brown also added 2.5 tackles for loss.  In six games, Brown has 37 tackles (26 solo), including 7.5 tackles for loss with a sack and interception. Brown had previously been named AOW four times (9/18/07, 9/8/08, 11/3/08, 10/13/09). nice

Coffey went seven-of-seven on extra points in the win over OWU.  Coffey also kicked off nine times for an average of 63.1 yards and three touchbacks.  Coffey is third in the UAA in scoring this season with 7.8 ppg. This is Coffey's 11th special teams AOW honor.

FOOTBALL UP TWO SPOTS IN AFCA RANKINGS… The Spartans moved up two spots this week from 11th to ninth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) weekly Division III poll. Ninth is the highest Case Western Reserve has been ranked in the AFCA poll this season. The Spartans are in action next on Saturday, October 24, when they face Hiram College on Homecoming Day at Case Field at 1:00 p.m.
