Whalen, English, Simpson Named UAA Athlete Of the Week, Football STays at 10
CLEVELAND, OH (September 22, 2009) - Senior quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH ~ left), sophomore defensivelineman Dale English (Middleburg Hts., OH ~ middle) and senior runner Elaine Simpson (Arlington Heights, IL ~ right) were each awarded University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for the week of September 14-20. 


Whalen was named Football Offensive Player of the Week for a performance in which he completed20-of-26 passes for 317 yards and six touchdowns in just the first half during a 41-6 victory over the Oberlin College on Saturday. Whalen also led the Spartans in rushing with five carries for 53 yards. Whalen has now thrown for 1,057 yards and 15 TDs in three games. This was Whalen's third athlete of the week this year and 14th of his career.
English earned Footall Defense Player of the Week honors for the victory over the Oberlin College on Saturday . English recorded nine tackles (six solo), six tackles for losses (30 yards total) and a sack. English has now recorded a sack in six straight games dating back to last season. This is English's first athlete of the week award.
Simpson won Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week as she raced a career-best time of 17:50 in the 5K while winning the individual title at the Calvin Cross Country Knight Invite. The #14-ranked Spartans finished second in the team competition to #2-ranked Calvin College. Simpson has now won two straight individual titles (Bill Sudeck Classic, 9/5). This is the first career athlete of the week award for Simpson.
