LANESE NAMED UAA COACH OF THE YEAR FOR THE SECOND TIME...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 7, 2008) - For the second time in her career as head men’s and women’s cross country coach at Case Western Reserve University, Kathy Lanese has been named University Athletic Association Coach of the Year.
The announcement was made on the University Athletic Association (UAA) website.
“This time [winning the award] is even more significant for me,” Lanese said. “Sometimes a team can get lucky and pull through with some wins here and there, but to be able to sustain the high level of competition we have here over the years has been really important to me.”
Just like in 2006 when she won the award, Lanese was able to once again lead the women’s cross country team to a first-place finish in the conference, winning the UAA Championships Nov. 1. The women’s team currently ranks eighth in the nation heading into the upcoming NCAA regional and national races.
“We are a unit this year, there isn’t one person who made this happen,” Lanese said. “When I think back to this season I will think about how we were able to be successful as a team. Each week someone else would step up and surprise me and that has been our identity this year.”
Lanese also had the men’s cross country team ranked as high as 11th in the nation earlier in the season, highlighted by winning the All-Ohio Championships for the first time in 15 years Oct. 10.
During her tenure at Case, Lanese was also named 2006-07 USFCCCA NCAA All-Region Coach of the Year and was named Ohio Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2003, in a season which the men’s team finished 20th at the NCAA Division III Championships. She also won the Ohio award twice [2006 & 2007] on the women's side.
“I have coached cross country and ran in Division I, but I just love Division III,” explained Lanese. “This [Case] is where I want to be. I was an assistant here in the early 90’s, and I always wanted to come back. To know that I am fulfilling my dreams coaching at a place I wanted to be back at is all the more rewarding.”
Lanese shares this year's honor with Assistant Coach Tim Barnes.
