MATHER PARK DEDICATION SET FOR WEDNESDAY...

CLEVELAND, OH (April 15, 2009) - In 2008, the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association announced that it would gift its endowment to Case Western Reserve University, spread over a number of areas. The campus community will have an opportunity to see one of those gifts in action on Wednesday, April 15. That's when Mather Park will officially be dedicated as the home field for Case Western Reserve's softball team.

The campus community is invited to attend the dedication ceremony beginning at 3 p.m. The event will include remarks from President Barbara R. Snyder, as well as a special first pitch by the Mather alumnae. Afterward, there will be a cookout and a softball double header between the Spartans and Denison University at 3:30 p.m. Mather Park is located on Mistletoe Drive at Wade Park Avenue.

"As they moved toward dissolving, the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association decided to support a number of initiatives on campus," explained Gary Pillar, director of development and assistant athletic director.  

He said as the organization was seeking ways to support projects that would carry on their legacy, the opportunity to support the softball field was a good fit. "The Mather Alumnae Association was very excited about supporting the one varsity sport that is solely for women on campus," he added.

"The university had already built a very good field. It was in pretty good shape, but it did not have very many amenities. We made the decision as a board. They were all enthusiastic about supporting the softball field," said Patricia Kilpatrick (FSM'49, GRS'51), a member of the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association board of directors and vice president emerita of the university.

"It's great to be able to support women's athletics. Softball is a relatively new addition and the team is wonderful. I'm hoping we win tomorrow," said Kilpatrick.

In addition to the alumni association's support of Mather Park, other friends of the university also have supported the project. Glenn Nicholls, vice president for student affairs, made a donation in honor of his late wife. Reporters will be able to keep score in the Peggy Nicholls Press Box.

Pillar said the ultimate goal is for Mather Park to have the same amenities as Nobby's Ballpark, home field for the Spartans baseball team.
