CLEVELAND, OH (April 7, 2009) - Case Western Reserve University senior men’s soccer player Kevin Bigart (Naperville, IL) will not only earn his degree in biochemical engineering this spring, but he will also receive a postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA to use towards his future studies.

Bigart plans on going to medical school following graduation and being selected to receive an NCAA postgraduate scholarship will only help his aspirations of becoming a doctor. He will receive a one-time grant of $7,500 to assist in his tuition.
“I'm hoping to attend medical school,” said Bigart. “I'm currently closing in on the end of the application process and wherever I end up going it’s going to be nice to use that scholarship there.”
Bigart currently holds a 3.7 cumulative grade-point-average and has been on the Dean’s List five times during his collegiate career. He has also earned several impressive academic honors which are given to student-athletes, including being named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team, as well as an NSCAA first team selection on their Scholar All-America Team.
“Earning this scholarship has been an incredible honor,” said Bigart. “It's always great to be recognized and I definitely feel all the hard work I've put in during my time here has paid off.”
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The athletes chosen must have performed with distinction as members of varsity teams in the sport for which they were nominated and also have at least a 3.2 grade-point-average.
Bigart’s 35 career goals on the soccer field and long list of achievements in the classroom made him the perfect candidate.
“My parents are thrilled and think it's an amazing honor, especially because it's given to such a select number of people,” said Bigart. “I was really proud when I heard I was nominated just because there are a lot of senior athletes here that would make great candidates.”
