UAA ANNOUNCES ALL-TOURNAMENT baseball TEAM...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 23, 2009) - Four Case Western Reserve University baseball players have been named to the University Athletic Association (UAA) All-Tournament Team for their individual performances at the recent UAA Championship in Sanford, Fla. The announcement was made on the conference website.
The four Spartans are sophomore catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA-pictured), senior pitcher Kevin Haley (Kent, OH), junior outfielder Clay Hurley (Connellsville, PA) and freshman shortstop Bobby Marko (Lyndhurst, OH). Case Western Reserve’s 3-3 finish at the five-day event was its best since 1995 (4-2, 3rd place) and its tie for second place was the best-ever finish.
Bills smashed two grand slams to lead the Spartans to big wins over Emory University and Washington University (MO) in back-to-back days. For the week, Bills hit .286 with a double, two long balls and a team-high nine runs batted in.
Haley, a team captain, recorded two quality starts on the mound and notched a 6-3 win over Emory at the championships. Haley (1-0) tallied an impressive 2.77 ERA while striking out eight batters and allowing just four walks.
Hurley hit .458 in Florida, leading the team in hits with 11 and committing no errors in the outfield. He had a triple, knocked in five runs and scored four. Marko hit .333, going 8-for-24 from the plate. He had six RBIs and scored six runs.
