hostoffer tries for case's third winter all-america honor...

CLEVELAND, OH (March 18, 2009) - Case Western Reserve University junior swimmer Alex Hostoffer (Highland Heights, OH) will try to complete a winter sport All-America hat trick this week [March 18-21] at the 2009 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by Macalaster College at the University of Minnesota.

Two weekends ago, senior wrestler Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills, OH) became an All-American in wrestling and last weekend, junior Obinna Nwanna (Maumee, OH) earned All-America honors in track and field.  If Hostoffer can finish in the top 16 in any of the three events he will participate in, he will become the third All-American honoree this winter for the Spartans.

“It [All-America] has been a goal of mine all along,” Hostoffer said.  “It can be accomplished – I just have a few more things to take care of.  It would be an honor to be able to say you are an All-American.  I also view it as something I could bring back to the school for all to be proud of.”

Hostoffer participated in the 200-yard IM [1:54.49] prelims today which he broke his own school record, but did not qualify [have to finish in top 16] for the finals tonight.  His two favorite swims come at the end of the meet.  The 100-yard breaststroke prelims are on Friday morning [finals in the evening] and Saturday morning [finals in the evening] are the 200-yard breaststroke prelims.

“I am looking forward to the 200 breast more than the other events,” Hostoffer said.  “It’s my favorite and has always been.  I enjoy the 100 breast and the 200 IM, but I have always had a real good feeling for the 200.  I am not afraid to go out strong and I know that I will have enough left in me to bring it home.”

Last month, Hostoffer became only the second male in school history to win an individual University Athletic Association (UAA) championship.  Hostoffer actually won two, the 100- [56.77] and 200-yard breaststroke [2:03.01].  He also broke school records in the 200-yard IM [1:54.92], the 200-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard freestyle [46.51] record while leading off the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Hostoffer, who transferred to Case Western Reserve this year from NCAA Division I Northwestern University, has not swum competitively since the UAA Championships ended February 14.  That’s a five-week break.

“I have just been training and trying to stay in shape,” Hostoffer explained.  “I have basically had to re-taper.”
