all-uaa basketball teams...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 4, 2009) - The Case Western Reserve University men’s and women’s basketball teams were well represented on the University Athletic Association’s All-UAA teams as three men and two women were honored, including junior guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) who was a first team selection.
Also getting the nod on the women’s side was freshman forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH) who was chosen to the second team. For the men, sophomore Kevin Herring (Columbus, OH) was named to the second team, while senior Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) and sophomore Reid Anderson (Avon Lake, OH) were both honorable mention selections.
Tondo had another spectacular season with the Spartans, ranking among the UAA’s best in almost every key statistical category. Tondo displayed her prototypical point guard skills by leading the conference in assists [4.0 apg], while racking up 12.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. She also tallied three steals per game [3rd in UAA] and 1.8 three-pointers per game [4th in UAA] validating her wide array of skills on the basketball court. Despite missing her final four games due to an illness, Tondo compiled ten games where she scored in double figures, including three season-high 17 point performances. This was the second consecutive season that Tondo was named to the All-UAA First Team.
Hollinger (pictured to right) had a phenomenal rookie season, averaging 12.5 points per game which was the highest scoring average by a rookie in the UAA and the fourth highest average among all players in the conference. She also made her presence known on the defensive end, tallying the second most blocks [1.5 bpg] in the UAA, while averaging five rebounds and a steal in each contest. She scored in double figures in 15 games this season, including a career-high 23 points against UAA-rival Carnegie Mellon University on February 1, 2009. Hollinger was the only Case Western Reserve player to play in and start all 25 regular season games.
“Ashleigh and Erin had very different seasons, but are certainly both deserving of these honors,” Head Coach Jennifer Reimer explained. “The veteran put up some great stats while fighting through some injury and illness. And the rookie put up big numbers instantly and never slowed down.”
On the men’s side, Herring (pictured below) followed up his UAA Rookie of the Year campaign with another stellar season, averaging 13.3 points per game [10th in UAA] while continuing to be one of the premiere three-point shooters in the league. He made a career-high 47 shots from behind the arc [6th in UAA] on .385-percent shooting, including 12 games where he made at least two three balls. He scored a season-high 33 points against UAA-rival Brandeis University where he went 10-of-17 from the field including five three-pointers. Herring was among the best in the conference in assists [2.6 apg] and steals [1.0 spg] while also hauling in four rebounds per game, including a 12 rebound outing against Denison on November 25, 2009.
Anderson led all Spartan scorers with 14.3 points per game [8th in UAA] this season, including seven games where he scored 20 points or more. Anderson scored a career-high 28 points in a win over Emory University on February 28, 2009, where he shot 64-percent from the field. For the season, he shot 74.7-percent from the foul line and a team-high 38.7-percent from three-point range, which were both top ten marks in the conference. He made 46 three-pointers [7th in UAA] on the year, including at least one in each of the season’s first 20 games.
Ending his collegiate career on a high note was Young who moved into second place on the school’s all-time list with 192 three-pointers made. Young also recorded 1,053 career points, including 11.0 points per game [15th in UAA] this season. He had 12 games where he scored in double-figures, eight of which came against conference opponents, highlighted by a 23 point outing over Emory University on January 10, 2009. This was the third consecutive season that Young has been an All-UAA selection.
“Earning All-UAA recognition is a nice honor for Kevin, Reid and Steve,” said Head Coach Sean McDonnell. “I am proud of their accomplishments and appreciative of their efforts.”
