INJURY MAKES SWIMMING'S BEUSHAUSEN CHANGE STROKE...

CLEVELAND, OH (February 11, 2009) - The Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team will be in the “Pink Zone” on Friday, February 13 when they face the University of Chicago at 6:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center.

As part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association’s (WBCA) “Pink Zone” initiative, the Spartan women will be wearing pink uniforms made possible by the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing (FPB) at Case Western Reserve.  FPB is also sponsoring pink warm-up t-shirts for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams to wear that evening.

All attendees that evening are encouraged to join the fun and wear “Pink”!

“FPB is proud to sponsor women’s basketball and help increase public awareness of breast cancer,” said the nursing school’s Dean May Wykle.  “This campaign helps to demonstrate FPB’s commitment to women’s health issues.”

niceThe women’s basketball team throughout history has had its share of nursing majors, including current freshman forward Sarah Milligan (Canton, OH).  Mary Herendeen, a second team All-University Athletic Association selection a year ago, graduated from FPB last spring and is currently a registered nurse (RN) in the Medical ICU at University Hospitals of Cleveland on Case Western Reserve’s campus.

“Basketball and FPB played a significant part in my development as a student-athlete and now as a professional,” Herendeen explained.  “I was so excited when I heard that Dean Wykle agreed to help the team raise breast cancer awareness through funding the pink uniforms.  I can’t think of a better fit for a partner than FPB.”

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone™, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007.  That year, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.

Donations will be accepted at the ticket table on Friday.

WIN A TV … The athletic department is also teaming up with Quiznos in University Circle to give away a free 22-inch flat screen television on Friday.  You can obtain a ticket for a chance to win the TV at Quiznos and by “wearing pink” to both of Friday night’s contests.  The men’s basketball game begins at 8:00 p.m. and the winner will be picked at the half of that game.
