TWO SPARTANS NAMED UAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 3, 2009) - Case Western Reserve University junior Obinna Nwanna (Maumee, OH) and freshman Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH) have been named the University Athletic Association Co-Athlete of the Week in their respective sports. The announcement was made on the UAA website today.
Nwanna had an incredible weekend, scoring in each event he participated in against Carnegie Mellon at the Veale Center. He had three first place finishes, and placed second in three others to score 24 of Case Western Reserve’s 47 points. Nwanna opened the day with a first place finish in the long jump, recording a 6.36m jump that easily topped his best jump from last season [5.55m, Brandeis]. He would then go on to win the high jump with a 1.75m jump, and place first in the 55-meter dash crossing the line in 6.81 seconds. He also placed second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.74 seconds, and second in the shot put with a 15.06m throw, as well as second in the triple jump with a 12.47m jump.
Hollinger scored in bunches this weekend, including a career-best performance that led to a 66-64 win over conference rival Carnegie Mellon University. On Friday in a loss against #5 Rochester, Hollinger scored a team-high 18 points [6-of-12 shooting], adding four rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 28 minutes. Then on Sunday she scored a career and team-high 23 points [7-of-19 shooting], and added seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals in a win over the Tartans. For the season, Hollinger has had ten double figure scoring games, and five 20-plus point performances. It was Hollinger’s third [Nov. 24, Jan. 12] UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season.
