BREW IN RUNNING FOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 21, 2007) - Tom Brew (Mentor, OH), a senior linebacker on the Case Western Reserve University football team (11-0), has been named one of the 10 finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy , given annually to the outstanding football player in Division III.
“This is the greatest honor for any football player at this level and Tom is an outstanding player and is certainly deserving of this honor,” said Case Western Reserve Head Coach Greg Debeljak (VOTE FOR COACH) . “He's played a key role in our team's success this season and he's one of the greatest athletes I have ever been around.”
The 15th annual Gagliardi award will be presented on Thursday, December 13, in Salem, Va., as part of the festivities leading up to the Division III national championship game played in Salem on Saturday, Dec. 15.
This season, Brew led the Spartans to an undefeated regular season (10-0) and the first playoff win in Case Western Reserve history when the team defeated Widener University, 21-20, Nov. 17 at Case Field. For the second year in-a-row, Brew was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-UAA.
He also was named a semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy for the second straight year and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV first team. On the year, Brew has started 10 games for the Spartans, recording 100 tackles (44 solo, 56 assisted), one interception, and 11.5 tackles for a combined loss of 27 yards.
Brew, who post a 3.34 GPA as a public health major, is a member of the Jackson Award Committee and is a group leader for Tar Wars, an organization designed to teach youth about the dangers of tobacco abuse.
VOTE FOR BREW … A separate fan-vote ballot will be announced along with the votes from the national committee. The Gagliardi Trophy, which has been awarded since 1993, recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and community service. Fans can cast their ballots until Dec. 4.
