FOUR SPARTANS NAMED UAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 13, 2007) - The University Athletic Association (UAA) has announced its Athletes of the Week (AOW) selections and Case Western Reserve University has four student-athletes earning nominations. Senior women’s cross country runner Esther Erb (Richmond, VA-pictured on page one), football’s Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) and Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH) and wrestler Dave Manoogian (Green, OH) all garnered UAA AOW awards this week.
Erb topped a field of 231 runners to win the women’s 6,000-meter race at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in Grand Rapids, MI. Erb completed the race in a time of 21:13.15, one second off the course record, to win her sixth race of the season and lead the Spartans to a second-place finish in the 31-team field, qualifying for the NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship in Northfield, MN.
Brew, a senior line backer, made a team-high 14 tackles, recovered a fumble, and registered a pass breakup in the Spartans’ 20-17 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University. The win completed an undefeated 10-0 campaign, earning the program’s first NCAA Division III Football Championship berth. Brew made the game’s final tackle, ending a potential game-winning drive by Ohio Wesleyan, to secure the undefeated season. Brew shared the honor with Tommy Bawden of Washington University (MO). Coffey, a freshman place kicker, converted two of three field goal attempts, including a game-winning 23-yard kick with 1:34 to play in the fourth quarter, in helping the Spartans to a 20-17 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University, completing a perfect 10-0 regular season and earning their first ever berth to the NCAA Division III Championship. Coffey, who also connected on a 42-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, has hit a school-record 10 field goals on the season, and finished 2-for-2 in extra-point attempts, improving to 97-percent on the year.
Manoogian, a senior, won all three of his matches at 141 pounds at the Baldwin-Wallace College Quadrangular. After receiving a forfeit versus Waynesburg College, Manoogian grappled his way to two victories, registering a fall in 4:06 against the College of Mount St. Joseph and scoring a 13-3 decision over host Baldwin-Wallace College in his final match of the day.
