SPARTANS NAME NEW TEAM PHYSICIAN, HONOR FORMER...
CLEVELAND, OH (July 30, 2007) - Dr. Shana Miskovsky, assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, has been selected to serve as head team physician for the Case Western Reserve Athletic Department. The announcement was made today by Athletic Director Dave Diles.
“I am deeply honored to accept the head team physician position at Case and to have the opportunity to interact with such a fine group of student athletes distinguished by their character, talent, drive and passion for excellence in sports and in life,” said Miskovsky.
Miskovsky replaces Dr. Tom McLaughlin, who had served as the Spartans’ team physician since the spring of 1973. McLaughlin missed only one Case home football game in his almost 35 years of service to the department. He will assume the new role of emeritus team physician. The Spartans will honor McLaughlin at their September 22 home football game.
"Dr. McLaughlin has cared for countless student-athletes and has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to our university,” said Diles. “His contributions cannot be overstated. I am thrilled that “Doc” will continue to contribute to our department as emeritus team physician.”
“Dr. Miskovsky's unique qualifications and exceptional work as one of our team physicians over the past three years will allow us to have a seamless transition,” Diles continued. “Her leadership will help us build on the great foundation of care established by Dr. McLaughin and in conjunction with our sports medicine staff, allow us to position our department for continued advancement in this critical area."
‘We are all greatly indebted to Dr. Tom McLaughlin and his predecessors who have built a strong sports medicine tradition here at Case,” Miskovsky added. “For over 30 years, Dr. McLaughlin has closely followed the progress of our athletes on the field and in the classroom; treating their ailments, guiding their rehabilitation, and encouraging them to succeed. His presence has made the sports medicine team better and has advanced our understanding of athletic injuries. Additionally, over the last several years, the contributions of Dr. Amanda Weiss-Kelly and Dr. Susannah Briskin to the team have been significant.”
Dr. Miskovsky received her M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1997. Since that time she has held many fellowships and post-graduate training positions that have specialized in orthopedic medicine and surgery. Notably, she had fellowships in orthopedic sports medicine (knee and shoulder surgery) at the Hughston Clinic with Dr. Glenn Terry and in foot and ankle surgery at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama with Dr. John Gould. Miskovsky has published numerous articles and been ask to speak at hospitals, universities, and on television regarding orthopedic medicine. Currently, she is the co-leader and developer of the “Surgical Anatomy: Musculoskeletal” course given to senior medical students. She has worked as the assistant team physician for the Spartan athletic program for the past three years.
“Looking towards the future, the sports medicine program will strive to continue to provide first-rate and innovative medical care customized to the needs of athletes,” Miskovsky stated. “Despite the many challenges ahead, we will remain dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of our athletes through injury prevention and treatment programs, educational opportunities and mentoring relationships.”
