SMETONA AND ERB NAMED UAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 19, 2008) - Case Western Reserve University senior men's tennis player Joe Smetona (Medina, OH) and senior runner Esther Erb (Richmond, VA) have been named a University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week (AOW) in their respective sport. The announcement was made on the UAA website this week.
Smetona claimed five victories at first singles during the Spartans' spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. Smetona registered straight-set wins over opponents from NCAA Division II schools East Stroudsburg University (6-1, 6-0) and the University of Charleston (6-1, 6-1), along with victories over Ohio Wesleyan University (6-2, 6-0), Missouri Valley College (6-3, 6-1) and Mount Union College (6-3, 6-1), to improve to 8-1 on the season. This was Smetona's second AOW of the spring [also Feb. 26].
Erb finished fourth in a field of 12 competitors in the 5,000-meter run at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Ada, Ohio, earning All-American accolades for the fourth time in her career (twice in cross country, one each indoor and outdoor). Her time of 17:17.21 is an indoor personal best. This was Erb's fourth AOW of the winter [Feb.26, 19, 5].
