SPORTS INFORMATION — 2008

Freshman guard Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA -pictured one page 1 ) represented women's basketball, senior runner Esther Erb (Richmond, VA) was selected in women's track and field, and senior Joe Smetona (Medina, OH) and sophomore Kristen Ko (Cincinnati, OH) were honored in men's and women's tennis.

Henry averaged 17 points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists in a 1-1 road weekend for the Spartans.  Henry tallied a career-high 21 points (7-for-12 shooting from the floor), three rebounds, and two assists in a 92-71 loss to the University of Rochester.  Two days later, she scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out four assists in a 63-49 victory over Carnegie Mellon University.  For the weekend, Henry hit five of 10 three pointers and shot 11-for-19 from the field. 

Erb, also the Co-Athlete of the Week last week, was the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000-meter run at the Kent State University Tune-Up.  Competing against runners in all NCAA divisions, Erb finished third in a time of 17.35.94.

Smetona went undefeated in singles and doubles play throughout the weekend in leading the Spartans to 7-2 victories over NCAA Division I Robert Morris College and Oberlin College.  Playing first singles, Smetona posted straight-set wins over opponents from Robert Morris (6-2, 6-1) and Oberlin (6-1, 7-5).  He teamed with brother John Smetona at first doubles in registering victories over Robert Morris (8-4) and Oberlin (8-3).

Ko earned victories in singles and doubles competition in leading the Spartans to a 9-0 triumph over NCAA Division I Robert Morris University.  Ko recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory at first doubles before teaming up with Marta Worwag for an 8-5 victory at first doubles.
