MEN READY FOR SPRING HOME OPENER...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 21, 2008) - With their fall season already complete, the men on the Case Western Reserve University tennis team are ready for the spring season which began on Feb. 16 with a 6-3 victory over Baldwin-Wallace College.
Sophomore Michael Peterson (Elm Grove, WI) started the season on a high note, topping the Yellow Jackets’ Jim Kucera 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles before he and teammate Allen Ye (Sycamore, IL) paired up to beat Adams and Sam Burris 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Peterson earned University Athletic Association Co-Athlete of the Week honors on Feb. 19 after his performance.
The Spartans have three second-team All-UAA selections returning this spring, including the Medina native Smetona brothers, sophomore John and senior Joseph, and junior Adam Erickson (Fort Wayne, IN - pictured on page 1).
Joe Smetona finished the 2006-07 with a 17-14 record, going 9-6 in singles competition and 8-8 in doubles. John Smetona finished 14-12 overall, with a 8-5 mark in singles and 6-7 record in doubles competition.
Erickson finished the 2006-07 season with nine victories, seven of which came in doubles competition.
Also returning for the Spartans is junior Kenneth Nguyen (Midlothian, VA), who finished with a team-high 10 wins in singles competition last season, finishing the year with an overall 12-10 record.
The team has three freshmen on their squad this year, including Colin Downey (Waverly, OH), John Macris (Hermitage, PA) and Kevin White (Downington, PA).
Next up for the team and interim head coach Greg Debeljak is a home match against Robert Morris University Feb. 22 at 3:00 p.m.
The Spartans will play Ohio Wesleyan University and Missouri Valley College March 13-14 in Hilton Head, SC, before closing the month at home March 26 against Allegheny College. The Spartans will host Tiffin University April 5, before heading to Atlanta, Ga. on April 24-27 for the UAA Championships, hosted by Emory University.
