SPORTS INFORMATION — 2008

The University Athletic Association (UAA) champion Spartans finished the 2007 regular season with a perfect 10-0 record and made the program's first-ever trip to the postseason, defeating Widener University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. They finished the season with an 11-1 record, No. 11 national ranking and had several players earn postseason accolades.

“After the kind of year we had, I think our team is deserving of this honor,” said Case Western Reserve Head Football Coach Greg Debeljak. “When you lump in schools like Mount Union, Youngstown State, Kent State, Akron, John Carroll, Baldwin-Wallace, and all the great programs, it's certainly quite an honor for us to be up there.”

The Cleveland Touchdown Club Charities Annual Awards Banquet is the oldest " football only " awards banquet in the country. Awards are presented to the outstanding players and coaches at the professional, collegiate, and high school level for their excellence throughout the season. The Touchdown Club also honors the MVP's of the Cleveland Muny Football League.

Senior offensive lineman Tom Zagorski, a local Benedictine High School product, will be honored as the Spartans' MVP at this year's awards dinner held at the IX Center February 18.  Debeljak received the College Coach Service Award last season from the Cleveland Touchdown Club Charities, while Mount Union College received the Bob Gain Cup after winning the 2006 Division III National Championship.

KAUFMAN NAMED ASSISTANT COACH AT CHICAGO... After a three-year stint as the Case linebackers coach and special teams coordinator, Tom Kaufman has been named the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at the University of Chicago. This past season, Kaufman helped guide the Spartans to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs and an undefeated (10-0) regular season.
