SPORTS INFORMATION — 2008

The Robert Bubb Coaching Excellence Award is presented by the NWCA each year to the outstanding coach in each division for exceptional team academics. In addition, the award winner must also be a coach that epitomizes the qualities and characteristics of a role model and mentor for developing young student-athletes.

While heading the wrestling program at Case Western Reserve, Del Rosa has coached 14 NCAA All-Americans and 17 Scholar All-Americans, including last year's first place Scholar All-American Team.

“It is a real pleasure for me to win this award and it's something our men have earned themselves and deserve,” Del Rosa said. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication in order for our men to maintain high academic standards and wrestling demands.”

Del Rosa came to Case Institute of Technology (CIT) in May of 1962 as an assistant football coach, wrestling coach and head tennis coach. During his tenure he has served as the head coach of football, baseball, tennis, and, most notably, wrestling. Del Rosa took over the wrestling program in 1965 and stayed in the job when CIT merged with Western Reserve University in 1967. In 1996, Del Rosa was inducted into the NCAA Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame. His wrestling teams have won five University Athletic Association titles (1988, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996).

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Del Rosa has served as assistant athletic director at Case since the early 1990s. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Del Rosa lettered three times in football and captained the 1958 Bearcats.

The Spartan wrestling team will be at home this Saturday (Jan. 19) when they take on the Purple Raiders from Mount Union College. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. in Horsburgh Gym.
