SPARTANS SWEEP WEEKLY UAA BASKETBALL HONORS...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 8, 2008) - Case Western Reserve University guards Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) and Kevin Herring (Blacklick, OH) have been named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week in women's and men's basketball, respectively. The announcement was made on the UAA website today.
Tondo, a sophomore, averaged 20 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals in helping the Spartans to a 2-1 week. Tondo averaged 13.5 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals in two games at the Surf City Classic in Irvine, Calif., tallying 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals in a 62-59 loss to Concordia University of Wisconsin then following with eight points and a game-high eight assists in a 74-67 overtime triumph over Widener University. She finished the week with a career-high 35 points on 14-of-23 field goal shooting (3-for-4 from three-point range) in an 85-65 win over Kalamazoo College.
Herring, a freshman, averaged 24 points and three assists for the Spartans at the Tampa Bay Shootout in St. Petersburg, Fla. Herring tallied a career-high 35 points on 12-of-22 shooting from the floor (3-for-6 from three-point range) and hit eight of nine free throws in a 74-73 buzzer-beating loss to DePauw University in the opening round, before compiling 13 points and five assists in a 92-80 loss to Colby-Sawyer College the following day. For both games, Herring connected on 14-of-15 free throws.
The Spartans open-up UAA play Saturday in Atlanta when they take on the Eagles from Emory University. The men's game is at 12:00 p.m. and the women's game is at 2:00 p.m.
