VARSITY ATHLETICS

SPORTS INFORMATION — 2006

Unfortunately, they soon got worse. After leading the team in tackles with 18 after just two games, Brew, a 2004 All-UAA selection, suffered a season ending injury in game three, which the Spartans won to improve to 3-0 on the year.

“After that play everyone knew I was hurt because I usually just bounce up,” said Brew. “I couldn’t even take a step. I just fell back to the ground. It was a big hit because I am the emotional leader out there.”

Emotional is exactly what the rest of the season would become for the local Mentor High School graduate, where he was an All-Conference, All-County, All-District and All-State honoree. Brew had to sit on the sideline and watch his team drop their remaining seven games.

“It was tough mentally and physically,” explained Brew. “I wanted to be out there with my friends and teammates. I just tried to help out the best I could with film and talking to the younger guys.”

The only saving grace was the fact Brew was able to be red shirted, giving him a fifth year on the football field in 2007. One of those two years begins this Saturday when the Spartans play Oberlin College in their season opener at Case Field at 6:00 p.m.

“I feel stronger, and we as a team have high hopes for this year,” said Brew.

Brew, a preseason All-American selection, is currently studying public health and would like to work in Epidemiology or Hospital Administration upon graduating from Case.
