LINK HITS 1,000 POINTS MIDWAY THRU JUNIOR YEAR...

Link is a two-time second team All-University Athletic Association and All-UAA Academic honoree. He led the team in scoring with 341 points his freshman year and 401 during his sophomore campaign. Link, who currently leads the team in scoring this season with 271 points, will definitely break into the schools all-time top ten points scorer list this season and could possibly get as high as number five by the end of next season. He already appears in the record books in five categories - most field goal attempted in a season (6th, 402-2001); single season three-point field goal percentage (7th, .417-1999); single season three-point field goals (2nd, 60-1999 & 3rd, 54-2001); career three-point field goals (3rd, 141); career field goals attempted (8th, 975).

NADER NAILS … Case Western Reserve senior 165-pounder Chris Nader (Lakewood - OH) represented the Spartans well this past weekend in Chicago at the University Athletic Association Wrestling Championships hosted by the University of Chicago. Nader won his weight class and was named to the All-Association first team. The St. Ignatius grad won by fall (13-3) over New York University's Fareed Hawwa and then won by decision (11-0) over Chicago's Peter Zafros. CWRU as a whole didn't finish as well in the three-team event. The Spartans fell to NYU 40-16 in their first match and then 48-16 to Chicago in their last match. Chicago came away the winners.

UPSET AND REMATCH … The Spartan women's basketball team won two UAA contest this past weekend on the road, one of them being a big one. CWRU defeated Brandeis University 86-77 Friday night in Boston and then turned around Sunday and knocked off the 10th ranked team in the nation, New York University, 66-58 in New York. It was NYU's (15-3, 4-3 UAA) first loss at home this season and the first time CWRU (14-3, 5-2 UAA), who is currently ranked 24th in the country and second in their region, has beat the Violets in school history. The Spartans went into the game 0-17 against NYU. The two teams won't have to wait long for a rematch as the Violets travel to University Circle this Friday for a 6:00 p.m. game at Horsburgh Gym (See Spartans Scores).

SPARTAN SCORES...

MEN'S BASKETBALL (6-11 Overall, 2-5 UAA) … Case Western Reserve University junior center Baran Onder (Brecksville - OH), a Brecksville/Broadview Heights High School grad, scored a team high 15 points this past Friday as the Spartans dropped their second straight with a 86-65 loss to Brandeis University in a University Athletic Association game on the road. Brandeis made 19 of 32 shots (59.4%) while CWRU only hit 13 of 35 (37.1%) as the Owls led by 12, 44-32 at the end of 20 minutes of play. Brandeis went on to out rebound the Spartans 31-16 in the second half and 47 to 38 in the game on the way to their second consecutive victory. Junior guard John Link added 11 points for the Spartans. The Owls were led by senior forward Rashad Williams (Redwood City - CA) who had a game high 17 points and freshman forward Glenn Wright (Wingdale - NY) who had a game high 15 rebounds, 14 of which came in the last 20 minutes. On Sunday Link scored a game high 23 points but that wasn't enough as the Spartans dropped their third straight 78-62 against UAA foe New York University on the road. Link, who made 9 of 19 shots from the field, including 4 of 8 from behind the arch, reached a milestone in the CWRU loss. He scored his 1,000th career point. Link went into the game with 990 and ended the contest with 1,013. NYU out rebounded CWRU 21 to 12 in the first half and 45-31 in the game, taking a 39-27 advantage into intermission. The Spartans didn't help their cause in the last 20 minutes of the game shooting only 28.9 percent from the field (11-38) while the Violets countered hitting 50 percent (9-18).
Senior center Justin Hoffman (Schenectady - NY) led NYU with 19 points. CWRU sophomore forward Jacob Baker (Orrville - OH) added seven points and a game high 8 rebounds. NEXT GAME: Home Friday, February 1 vs. New York University @ 8:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (14-3 Overall, 5-2 UAA) … Four Case Western Reserve University players scored in double digits led by sophomore guard Angie Zeuch's (Cincinnati - OH) 18 points as the Spartans defeated Brandeis University Friday night 86-77 in a University Athletic Association contest on the road. Spartan graduate student center Terri Williams (Columbus-OH) scored 10 of her 14 total points in the first half as CWRU led 37-31 at intermission. Williams also grabbed seven of her game high nine rebounds in the first 20 minutes as CWRU out rebounded the Owls 23-16 in the first 20 minutes. The second half was all Zeuch's as she hit 6 of 11 shots from the field to score 16 of her team high 18 points. Brandeis hung in making 20 of 39 shots (51.3%) tying the game up 52-52 at the 12:03 mark, but that was is close as they got as CWRU went on to outscore the Owls 34-25 in the remainder of the game. Senior guard Tracy Roessner (Brunswick - OH) and senior forward JeNine NIckerson (Berea - OH) also scored in the teens for CWRU. Roessner had 17 points and Nickerson added 12. Brandeis sophomore guard Danielle Fitzpatrick (Stratham - NH) led all scorers with 29 points going 12 of 14 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. On Sunday Case Western Reserve University forced New York University to turn the ball over 20 times as the Spartans upset the number 10th ranked team in the country 66-58 in an Association road game. It was also CWRU's first victory over the Violets in school history as they went into the game 0-17 against them. The Spartans had three players who scored in double digits led by Angie Zeuch's 14. Nickerson and junior forward Liz Hanschen (Austin - TX) added 10 points a piece. The Violets were led by senior guard Dari Magyar (Boonton TWP. - NJ) who had a game high 17 points. CWRU, currently ranked 24th in the country, forced 13 of NYU's 20 turnovers in the first half to take a 36-29 lead into the break. The Violets battle back in the second half bringing it within two points 45-47 with seven minutes remaining but the Spartans hung on winning their second straight and third out of their last four. Both teams shot poorly from the field in the last 20 minutes, CWRU only made 8 of 29 shots (27.6%) and NYU only hit 9 of 38 (23.7%). MEN'S FENCING (1-2 Dual Meets) … The Spartan men's fencing team traveled across town this past Saturday to take part in the Cleveland State University Invitational. CWRU fenced three matches going 1-2. They lost to Cleveland State 12-15 in match one, were defeated by Wayne State University 10-17 in their second match, and then defeated the University of Detroit 20-7 in the team's last match. Individuals that did well for the Spartans included senior Steve Buchi (Newark - DE) who went 6-3 in the Sabre, senior Marc Gurarie (Shaker Heights - OH) who went 6-3 in the Foil, and junior Brian Moore (North Olmsted - OH) who also finished 6-3 in the Epee. NEXT MATCH: @ University of Detroit February 2.

WOMEN'S FENCING (1-2 Dual Meets) … The CWRU women's fencing team also traveled to CSU this past weekend with the men. The lady Spartans had three matches as well finishing 1-2 on the day. They lost to Cleveland State 10-11 in match one, Wayne State 8-19 in their second match, and then defeated the University of Detroit 10-9 in their final match. Top performers for CWRU were senior Elizabeth Elder (Cincinnati - OH) who went 6-3 in the foil, junior Elissa Beekman (Teaneck - NJ) who went 6-3 in the Epee, and junior Elizabeth Persson (Havre De Grace - MD) who finished 5-4 overall. NEXT MATCH: @ University of Detroit February 2.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK … The Spartan men's indoor track team kicked-off their 2002 season this past weekend by hosting the Spartan Relays in the Veale Center along with Thiel College, Mount Union College, and Cuyahoga Community College. First place finishers for CWRU included senior Farzad Mazloomi (Cincinnati - OH) in the weight throw (12.68 meters), senior Thomas Dominic (Cincinnati - OH) in the high jump (1.98 meters), sophomore Dan Haylett (Mantua - OH) in the pole vault (4.27 meters), and sophomore Matt Finnerty (Poland - OH) in the 5,000 meter run (15:27.55). NEXT MEET: CWRU Invitational Friday, February 1.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK … The CWRU women co-hosted the Spartan Relays this past weekend with the men in first year Head Coach Kathy Lanese's debut. Top performers for the Spartan women were freshman Amy Staub (Oil City - PA) who won the 1,500 meter run (5:09.14) and second in the 800 meter run (2:23.58), senior Lydia Toth (Cleveland - OH) who placed second in the high jump (1.52 meters), freshman Diana Kovacic (Rock Creek - OH) who placed second in the weight throw (9.85 meters), and freshman Vicki Grammer (Andover - OH) who placed second in the 1,500 meter run (5:20.37). NEXT MEET: CWRU Invitational Friday, February 1.

WRESTLING (2-7, 0-2 UAA Dual Meets) … The Spartan wrestling team participated in the 2002 University Athletic Association Wrestling Championships this past weekend at the University of Chicago. CWRU finished last out of three teams going 0-2 while Chicago, currently ranked ninth in the nation, won it going 2-0. In the team's 40-16 loss to New York University, sophomore 149-pounder Zak Kallai (Wadsworth - OH) won by fall (6:19) over Tim Shin, 165-pounder Chris Nader won by decision (11-0) over Fareed Hawwa, and sophomore 184-poounder Aaron Yoches (Potomiac - MD) won by decision (10-0) over John Rysiejko. In their 48-16 loss against Chicago, Nader was the only winner for CWRU winning by decision (11-0) over Peter Zafros. NEXT MATCH: Away Friday-Saturday, February1-2 at Wheaton College Invitational.
