UAA CHAMPIONSHIPS...
CLEVELAND, OH (October 27, 2007) -
Senior Esther Erb (Richmond, VA-pictured) won her fifth-straight race, leading eighth ranked Case Western Reserve University to a second place finish at the University Athletic Association Championship at Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
Third ranked Washington University (MO) was first overall with 31 points followed by Case Western Reserve with 44 points. Emory University, currently ranked 28th, finished third with 58 points.
“We had a good day, but didn’t have a great day,” explained Case Head Coach Kathy Lanese. “This team is going to put it all on the line at the Great Lakes Regional meet in two weeks and carry that momentum with them in to nationals.”
Erb solidified herself as the top distance runner in the UAA, finishing the 6,000-meter course in 22:18. Erb ran with her teammates for a big part of the race and than took off for the last 1,200 meters en route to her first UAA title. Esther has finished in the top-three positions in her last 13 races and in the top-ten positions in her last 20 races, dating back to September of 2005.
Junior Kristin Bowhers (Rochester, NY) finished sixth with a time of 22:51, freshman Andrea Fischione (Export, PA) was tenth overall at 23:09 and junior Britta Kumley (Solon, OH) finished 11th with a time of 23:19.
First team All-UAA honors went to Erb and Bowhers. Second team All-UAA honors went to Fischione and Kumley.
“If we run a good race at the Regional we're going to be second and if we run a great race we will win it,” Lanese said. “Our goal is to reach the national meet for the second straight year.”
The Spartans have several weeks off to help prepare for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at Calvin College on November 10th. The Spartans have experience on Calvin’s course as they finished second to Calvin back on September 15th. Calvin and Case Western Reserve have been ranked first and second in the Great Lakes Region all season long.
