WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY—2007

CLEVELAND, OH (October 5th, 2007) - Senior Esther Erb (Richmond, VA-pictured) won her fourth-consecutive race as the eighth ranked Case Western Reserve University women’s cross country team finished sixth overall out of 44 universities at the 5,000-meter All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships in Delaware, Ohio.

Division I Miami University (OH) won the overall race with 75 points followed by Ohio University in second with 80 points. Akron University finished third with 100 points. The Spartans finished [176 points] right behind Division II champion Cedarville University and just ahead of Bowling Green State University and Malone College.

Case Western Reserve was allowed to run against teams in each NCAA Division [I, II, III], further preparing them to defend their 2006 University Athletic Association title. This is the second consecutive week the Spartans have raced against top-tier talent.

Case Western Reserve not only defeated every school in Division III with 23 points to win their second consecutive Division III title at Ohio Wesleyan, but they also knocked off Ohio Division I opponents in the overall race. Bowling Green State University, Kent State University, the University of Dayton and The Ohio State University all finished behind the Spartans.

Senior Esther Erb finished first overall out of 290 student-athletes with a time of 18:29, defeating all Division I, II/NAIA and III opponents. Erb defeated Laura Neufarth of Miami University (OH) by three seconds as the two raced for the finish line. This marks her fourth-consecutive victory this season and fifth as a Spartan.

Junior Britta Kumley (Solon, OH) finished second in Division III with a time of 19:35. The Pennsylvania freshman duo of Andrea Fischione (Export, PA) and Justin Jeroski (Murrysville, PA) placed third [19:56] and sixth [20:09] in Division III, respectively. All four of these Spartans hold the top individual finishing times this season in the UAA.

Case Head Coach Kathy Lanese knows the upcoming UAA meet will be tough.

“I’ll never underestimate Washington University. They are a experienced team, so it’s going to be a very challenging race in Boston," said Lanese. "But our woman are ready for it."

The Spartans have several weeks off to prepare for the UAA championships on Saturday, October 27th at Brandeis University in Boston, Massachusetts.
