CLEVELAND, OH (September 22, 2007) -
Senior Esther Erb (Richmond, VA-pictured) won her second consecutive race to lead 12th ranked Case Western Reserve University women’s cross country to their second team title of the season at the 5,000-kilometer College of Wooster Invitational in Wooster, Ohio.
Case finished first (out of 10) teams with 15 points, as they swept the top five positions. Kenyon College finished second with 68 points followed by Ashland University in third with 69 points.
The Spartans have now won the Wooster Invitational two years in a row, as they took first last year with 22 points.
Erb now has ten consecutive top-three finishes, placing first overall (out of 109) with a time of 19:08. Esther is finishing races with power, as her time of 17:22 in last weeks race at Calvin College is the top overall finish in the University Athletic Association to date this season.
The Spartans had seven runners finish in the top fifteen, as they stayed in their pack and ran a solid race.
Junior Kristen Bowhers (Rochester, NY) finished second overall with a time of 19:29, junior Britta Kumley (Solon, OH) finished third with a time of 19:34 and freshman Andrea Fischione took fourth with a time of 19:35. Rounding out the top five was freshman Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA) finishing with a time of 19:38.
“The girls started slowly and ran as a group for two miles,” explained Coach Lanese. “We knew a win was in order, but we weren’t certain we were going to sweep the race. I’m very pleased with the results.”
Case will travel to Chicago for the annual Loyola of Chicago Sean Earl Invitational next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. (CST).
