WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY—2007


CLEVELAND, OH (September 1, 2007) - The defending University Athletic Association women’s cross country champions, Case Western Reserve University, finished where they left off. In first place.

The Spartans had four runners finish in the top ten, leading the field at the Bill Sudeck Classic in Hunting Valley, Ohio with 42 points. Rounding out the top three were Oberlin and Baldwin Wallace respectively. The Yeomen finished with 56 points, while the Yellow Jackets ended up with 107 points.

Finishing first for the Spartans was senior Esther Erb (Richmond, VA-pictured) who placed second overall with a time of 17:55:00. Erb and overall individual winner from Edinboro, Rachel Lanzel, were running at full speed to the finish line, Esther fell short by a mere two seconds.

Other Spartans who finished in the top ten were freshman Andrea Fischione (Export, PA) (7, 19:46:00), sophomore Joy Zhu (Chalfont, PA) (9, 19:48:00) and freshman Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA) (10, 19:53:00).

Coach Kathy Lanese was all smiles after this victory, citing hard work and determination as a key to this young Spartan program. "I cannot say how happy I am, it's been an unbelievable day, and both teams have set a new tone for the 2007 season,” Lanese said.

Next up for the Spartans is their annual Alumni Meet next Saturday at Squire Valleevue Farm at 9 a.m.
