2006 UAA CHAMPIONSHIP...
CLEVELAND, OH (October 28, 2006) -
The Case Western Reserve University women’s cross country team won its first-ever University Athletic Association Championship today in St. Louis. The Case women (PICTURE), currently ranked 17th in the nation, had 39 points, topping host Washington U., currently ranked 3rd in the nation, who had 42 points.
Case Head Coach Kathy Lanese, currently in her sixth year at Case, was named the UAA Coach of the Year on the women’s side (PICTURE). The Spartans had six runners finish in the top 15 (out of 74) on the 6,000-meter course.
“I think it’s just a major accomplishment, not only that we won, but that we beat the third ranked team in the country,” said Lanese. “It proves we are a top ten team, that’s something we already knew. Hopefully, now everyone else will believe it as well.”
Case junior Esther Erb (Richmond, VA) led the way with a second place finish (22:14.63). Erb finished right behind race winner Beth Herndon of Washington U. (22:08.80). Senior Stephanie Nothelle-pictured (Porter, IN) finished fourth (22:16.57), sophomore Kristen Bowhers (Rochester, NY) placed fifth (22:26.88), senior Karyn Wheeler (Worthington, OH) finished 13th (23:17.29) and sophomore Britta Kumley (Solon, OH) placed 15th (23:37.54).

“We are not over celebrating, we are enjoying the day and win, but we have some business to take care of in two weeks,” continued Lanese.
