CASE 3, CHICAGO 2 ...
ROCHESTER, NY (November 3, 2007) - The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team battled with pride the entire University Athletic Association volleyball championship in Rochester, New York.
The Spartans proved in match three against Rochester that they have the ability to come back from large deficits and play excellent volleyball. Although Case Western Reserve fell an inch short against the Yellowjackets, a match against the University of Chicago for the battle of seventh place was in store for the Spartans.
Case Western Reserve defeated Chicago earlier in the season and this was a chance for the Spartans to end on an extremely positive note.
The Spartans (14-20, 4-7 UAA) split the first four games with the Maroons (7-26, 1-10 UAA), forcing a deciding game five.
The Spartans led 7-3 on an Elise Snell (Valparaiso, IN) kill and never looked back, as they cruised to a 15-12 game five victory, solidifying a seventh place finish in the UAA.
Sophomore middle blocker S.K. Piper (Portage, MI) nailed a match-high 20 kills against the Maroons. Freshman outside hitter Beth Karpinski (Avon Lake, OH) double-doubled for the second straight match with 16 kills and 27 digs. Freshman libero Andrea Lamont (Columbia, MD) saved 26 digs and in her Spartan finale, senior middle blocker Julianna Burrows (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI-pictured) knocked down 10 kills.
Much credit needs to be given to the Spartans coaching staff. Head Coach Karen Farrell has done a nice job building this team and has a great rapport with her squad. Associate Head Coach Nelson Wittenmyer and assistants’ Jeff Harrah and Lucas Bacon are already hungry for the 2008 season to begin.
The Spartans return all but Burrows next year and should have a very successful 2008 season with the addition of the 2012 recruiting class.
