SPARTAN VOLLEYBALL —2007

ROCHESTER, NY (November 3, 2007) - Improvements are apparent - the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team has battled all championship long.

The fifth-seeded Spartans (13-20, 3-7 UAA) lost to host University of Rochester (17-20, 1-9 UAA) 3-2 (30-24, 30-26, 16-30, 35-37, 16-14) in the third match of the 2007 University Athletic Association volleyball championship in Rochester, New York.

The Spartans rallied from a two-game deficit. Senior middle blocker Julianna Burrows (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI-pictured) was instrumental for Case Western Reserve in game three. The lone senior on the Spartan roster was huge from a defensive standpoint as the Spartans won the game 30-16. In what would be the second-to-last match of Burrows volleyball career, she played with a passion that her teammates will remember for the rest of their time as a Spartan.

Game four was the best match of all. The Spartans battled back from a 29-26 deficit to tie the game up at 29-29. Both teams continued to battle as the score again was tied at 35 points apiece. Two straight Spartan points iced the victory and sent the match to game-five. Case was very aggressive, and the blocking attack from Miranda Lange (South Euclid, OH), Burrows and Julie Schaefer (Independence, OH) made this the single-best comeback of the season for the Spartans and a pivotal momentum shift if Case wanted a shot at the fifth-place game later on in the afternoon.

Two straight S.K Piper (Portage, MI) kills tied the score at 10-10 in game five. Freshman outside hitter Beth Karpinski (Avon Lake, OH) than made a huge block, forcing Rochester’s attack out of bounds, as the Spartans led 12-11. An Alicia Beckett ace put the Spartans up 14-13. However, three straight stings [kills] from the Yellowjackets sealed the match and the victory.

Schaefer [Julie] triple-doubled for the third time this season with 10 kills, 10 digs and 37 assists. Sophomore middle blocker S.K. Piper (Portage, MI) and Burrows [Julianna] combined for 34 kills. Karpinski [Beth] double-doubled with 13 kills and 21 digs and freshman libero Andrea Lamont (Columbia, MD) saved 32 digs.

Case Western Reserve University will play the University of Chicago in the battle for seventh-place at 2:30 p.m.
