SPARTAN VOLLEYBALL —2007

ROCHESTER, NY (November 2, 2007) - The fifth-seeded Case Western Reserve University volleyball team (13-19, 3-6 UAA) fell 3-0 (25-30, 20-30, 8-30) to fourth-seeded Carnegie Mellon University (19-14, 6-3 UAA) in the second match of the 2007 University Athletic Association Championships in Rochester, New York.

The Spartans battled the Tartans all match long. Case trailed 22-21 in game one before Carnegie Mellon went on a nine-to-four run to seal the victory. In game three, Case Western Reserve trailed 25-16, but went on a huge 10-to-one run to tie the game up at 26 points apiece. Unfortunately, the Spartans were unable to ice the victory as Carnegie Mellon tightened up it’s defense and defeated Case Western Reserve for the second time this season.

Freshman outside hitter Anne Murphy (Dayton, OH-pictured) nailed ten kills for the Spartans. Sophomore middle blocker S.K. Piper (Portage, MI) had nine kills and freshman outside hitter Beth Karpinski (Avon Lake, OH) had eight kills and 16 digs. Junior setter Julie Schaefer (Independence, OH) “double-doubled” for the second straight match with 15 assists and 15 digs.

Case Western Reserve plays against the University of Rochester tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m.
