CLEVELAND, OH (August 31, 2007) -
The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team began their season in dramatic fashion by defeating the Lawrence University Vikings 2-1 in double overtime.
Junior forward Kevin Bigart (Naperville, IL - pictured) scored the game winning goal with about seven minutes remaining in the second overtime to give the Spartans their first victory in game one of the 2007 season.
After a first period of physical play and no offense from either squad, junior forward RJ French (Zionsville, IN) broke the game open with 23:22 remaining in the second half to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.
The Case Western Reserve defense held Lawrence to only five shots the entire game, one of them getting past senior goalkeeper Chad Skidmore (Centerville, OH) to bring the game to a 1-1 tie in the second half of play.
The Spartans totaled 22 shots (16 on goal) for the entire game, while holding Lawrence to only 5 shots (3 on goal) for the game.
The team will resume play tomorrow when they take on Allegheny College at 4 p.m. in the second day of the Case Tournament.
