CLEVELAND, OH (November 18, 2006) -
Ohio Wesleyan University junior midfielder Nick Skoczen (Chagrin Falls, OH) hit the final penalty kick (4-3) to lift the Battling Bishops over Case Western Reserve University after regulation and two overtimes of scoreless play. With the penalty kick victory, Ohio Wesleyan reaches the Elite Eight of the remaining Division III soccer teams.
OWU (14-0-6, 2-0-1 NCAA) junior goalkeeper Jamison Dague (Bexley, OH) held the Spartans (17-2-2, 1-0-1 NCAA) scoreless with four saves as Case edged the Bishops in shots, 17-13, in the NCAA sectional semifinal. Senior midfielder Brandon Bianco (Powell, OH) led Ohio Wesleyan with four shots.
Case sophomore goalkeeper Konrad Karasek (Prospect Heights, IL) had eight saves on the day, including two spectacular diving efforts in the final ten minutes of regulation, and one with 7:16 remaining in the second overtime to extend the game into penalty kicks. Sophomore forward Kevin Bigart (Naperville, IL)-pictured had six shots to lead the Spartans' offensive efforts.
“We had a great season,” said Case Head Coach Dan Palmer. “Nobody expected us to be here and we showed them we belong. It was a tremendous run for our seniors. We have a great nucleus, and we will start getting ready for next year.”
Dominican University will face Ohio Wesleyan tomorrow in the sectional final match at Case Field at 1:00 p.m.
