#12 CASE 2, DENISON 0...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 11, 2006) -
Case Western Reserve University sophomore forward Kevin Bigart’s (Naperville, IL) penalty kick goal just over 11 minutes (11:30) into tonight’s match was enough to put the Spartans into the sectionals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship.
Case, who was playing its first NCAA postseason match, defeated visiting Denison University 2-0 tonight in the second round of the NCAA playoffs at Case Field. The Spartans improve to 17-2-1 on the year and 1-0 in the postseason. The Big Red finished their 2006 season 13-5-2 (1-1 NCAA).
“I felt like the key against this team was to score first and certainly early, because they don’t give up a lot of goals,” explained Head Coach Dan Palmer. “So to have that penalty kick goal early put us in a pretty good position.”
Spartan sophomore midfielder Matt Paglia-pictured (Pittsburgh, PA) added an insurance goal 30 minutes (29:56) into the game to help Case win its seventh straight. Sophomore goalkeeper Konrad Karasek (Prospect Hts., IL) played the entire match in goal, shutting out Denison with two saves.
“The guys played well,” continued Palmer. “The whole season has progressed in a manner that allowed us to be prepared for the match. We executed the game plan and were able to come out with a victory. It was a good team effort.”
The Spartans will play Ohio Wesleyan University next weekend at a site to be determined.
