MEN'S SOCCER — 2006


CLEVELAND, OH (November 4, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore midfielder Justin Steggerda’s (Johnston, IA) goal in the 69th minute of tonight's regular season finale was historic in two ways. The game winner helped the Spartans claim their first University Athletic Association title and assured them a spot in their first NCAA postseason.

Case defeated the University of Rochester 2-1 in Rochester, New York. The Spartans, ranked 15th in the country and second in their region (16-2-1, 5-2 UAA), find out who they face in round one of the 2006 NCAA Division III playoffs on Monday (Sept. 6).

Rochester (8-5-3, 2-3-2 UAA) began the scoring with a goal at the 14:10 mark. The Spartans tied the game 1-1 in the 35th minute (35:30) on a sophomore forward RJ French (Zionsville, IN) goal assisted by sophomore midfielder Matt Paglia (Pittsburgh, PA). Steggerda tallied his historic goal off a pass from freshman midfielder Brian Evans (Bartlett, TN) at the 69:59 mark and the Case defense held the Yellowjackets scoreless in the remaining minutes.

Spartan sophomore goalkeeper Konrad Karasek (Prospect Hts., IL) played the full 90 minutes in goal making five saves. Case out shot Rochester 22-2 in the second half and 29-8 in the match.
