ALL-OHIO CHAMPIONSHIPS...
CLEVELAND, OH (October 5, 2007) -
The 27th ranked Case Western Reserve University men’s cross country team finished 11th overall out of 39 schools at the 8,000-meter All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships in Delaware, Ohio.
Each school raced against one another for the overall competition, but the results are separated per division [I, II, III] as well. This was another huge test for the Spartans, as they were able to run against some of the best competition in the state.
Division II Malone College won the overall competition with 30 points followed by Division I University of Cincinnati in second with 90 points and Ohio University finished third with 179 points. Case Western Reserve finished 11th overall [299 points] behind Shawnee State University and just ahead of the University of Dayton and Tiffin University.
The Spartans placed fourth in Division III with 97 points behind Heidelberg College, Mount Union College and Ohio Northern University. Case Western Reserve defeated several Division I schools in the overall competition including Youngstown State University, Wright State University, Bowling Green University and Dayton.
Case Western Reserve junior Dominic Smith (New Richmond, OH-pictured) finished eighth overall out of 259 student-athletes and first overall in Division III with a time of 26:14. Smith has three consecutive victories and has finished in the top-ten in every race this year.
Other top finishers for the Spartans included junior Ryan Gjoraas (Plymouth, MN), who finished sixth in Division III with a time of 27:08 and junior captain Mike Petro (Cincinnati, OH), who finished 21st in Division III with a time of 27:53.
Sophomore Austin Schmidt enjoys the competition Case Western Reserve has faced over the past several weeks.
“When you go up against Division I opponents you know your racing against the best of the best,” said Schmidt. “The team can really see how well we stack up against the best talent in the nation."
Coach Kathy Lanese figures University Athletic Association competition will be a good test for the Spartans.
“NYU, Carnegie Mellon, Rochester and Washington (MO) are all going to challenge us at UAAs, it's going to be a heck of a race."
The Spartans have a nice break to help prepare for the UAA championships on Saturday October 27th at Brandeis University in Boston, Massachusetts.
