MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY—2007

CLEVELAND, OH (September 2, 2007) - The 33rd ranked Case Western Reserve University men’s cross country team finished second (out of six) teams at the 8,000-kilometer College of Wooster Invitational in Wooster, Ohio.

Division II Ashland University was victorious with 23 points, followed closely by the Spartans in second with 43 points and Walsh University in third with 91 points.

Junior Dominic Smith (New Richmond, OH-pictured) continued his phenomenal start as he won the race with a time of 26:27. This was Smith’s first victory as a Spartan and his third consecutive top-five finish this season.

Also finishing strongly for Case was junior Ryan Gjoraas (Plymouth, MN) who placed seventh with a time of 27:29, junior captain Mike Werneiwski (Buffalo, NY) finishing ninth with a time of 27:43 and junior captain Mike Petro (Cincinnati, OH) finishing 11th with a time of 27:45:50.

"We knew Ashland was the team to beat and we measured up pretty equally with them," said Head Coach Kathy Lanese.

Coach Lanese understands that although both teams are enjoying immense successes, the Spartans have plenty of unfinished business to attend too.

“Both teams are heading in the right direction, but we have a lot of work to do in preparation for the UAA championships and regional meet," said Lanese.

Case will travel to the Loyola of Chicago Sean Earl Invitational next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. (CST).
