CALVIN COLLEGE INVITATIONAL...
CLEVELAND, OH (September 15, 2007) -
The 33rd-ranked Case Western Reserve University men’s cross country team finished fifth (out of 9) at the 8,000-meter Calvin College Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Defending National champion Calvin College won the race with 31 points.
Case Western placed fifth with 108 points behind 12th ranked Wisconsin-Osh Kosh and 23rd ranked Ohio Northern University.
Junior Dominic Smith (New Richmond, OH-pictured) was the top overall performer for the Spartans, finishing fifth overall in a time of 25:15. Freshman Reza Mohammadpour (Mayfield Hts, OH) finished ninth with a time of 25:30 and junior captain Mike Petro (Cincinnati, OH) finished 28th with a time of 26:02.
Head Coach Kathy Lanese praised her team’s effort against the defending national champions.
“This was tough, tough competition,” said Head Coach Lanese. “The men were up there in the beginning, they hung together for two miles, and than started separating. We have to use strategy like this to know what were capable of. There were six nationally ranked teams in the men’s event and we fought the best we could.”
Men’s cross country will travel south next Saturday for the College of Wooster Invitational beginning at 11:00 a.m.
