SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2007


CLEVELAND, OH (October 27, 2007)
- Case Western Reserve University snapped a seven-game Stagg Field losing streak this afternoon with a 35-3 victory at the University of Chicago in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game.

The Spartans remain undefeated on the season (8-0, 2-0 UAA) and will play for the outright UAA title Saturday [Nov. 3] at Case Field when they host Washington University (6-2, 2-1) at 12:00 p.m. Washington lost 18-13 today at Carnegie Mellon University (4-4, 2-1 UAA).

After a Maroon (3-4, 0-3 UAA) 32-yard field goal at 6:01 in the first quarter, sophomore receiver Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH) put the Spartans up 14-3 with two consecutive touchdown grabs from the arm of sophomore quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH). Cowdrick’s scores were from 15 and 23 yards out to end the first [2:17] and begin [13:22] the second quarter. Whalen then found freshman receiver Shaun Nicely (Willoughby, OH) twice to pull away from Chicago 28-3 at the intermission. Nicely’s scores were from eight and four yards out at 8:51 and with 10 seconds remaining in the half.

Cowdrick, who entered the game ranked first in the UAA and 21st in the NCAA in receiving yards per game (99.9 avg.), finished with seven catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Nicely had five catches for 39 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense set up three-of-four Spartan scores in the first half on interceptions by sophomore linebacker Jeff Brown (North Olmsted, OH-pictured), sophomore defensive back Mike Pelyak (Newton Falls, OH) and senior defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH).

Whalen had a 13-yard touchdown run with 8:09 left in the game to secure the 35-3 road win. He finished the day completing 15-of-28 passes for 163 yards and four touchdown passes and also ran the ball nine times for 61 yards and one score. Junior defensive back Luiz Goncalves (Franklin, PA) and senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) each had an interception in the second half to give the Spartans five picks on the day.

Brown led the Spartans with ten total tackles (7 unassisted, 3 assisted) and senior linebackers Mike Tuertscher (Cincinnati, OH) and Brew added nine a piece.

Freshman place kicker Sam Cofffey (Middletown, OH) was perfect [5-of-5] on PATs for the day.
