CLEVELAND, OH (October 20, 2007) -
Case Western Reserve University sophomore quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) tallied 178 yards of total offense in 30 minutes work as the Spartans remained undefeated on the year with a 42-0 victory over Saint Vincent College [0-7] in Cleveland, Ohio. It was Case Western Reserve’s first shutout since the 1999 season.
The Spartans, 7-0, travel to the University of Chicago Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. (CST) University Athletic Association (UAA) game. Case Western Reserve has scored 40-plus points four times this season and entered the game ranked 16th in the country [NCAA Div. III] in scoring [38.8].
Whalen, who leads the UAA in total offense [239.9 avg.], completed 13-of-17 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 23 yards and a touchdown on six carries in two quarters.
After Whalen found sophomore wide receiver Ryan Kolesar (Mentor, OH) on a 13-yard strike at 10:15 in the first quarter to put Case Western Reserve up 7-0, sophomore running back Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA-pictured) ran for two consecutive one-yard touchdowns to make it 21-0 with 3:51 left in the first half. Whalen proceeded to run one [15 yards] in himself with 1:20 left to give the Spartans a 28-0 halftime lead. Kolesar had three catches for 53 yards and one touchdown in the game.
Checkan made it three straight at 5:39 in the third quarter with another one-yard touchdown run and freshman running back Billy Deitmen (Mentor, OH) plowed in from three yards out with 16 seconds left in the quarter to wrap-up the scoring on the day. Checkan finished the day with 12 carries for 69 yards and three touchdowns while Deitman added 18 runs for 89 yards and one touchdown.
Case Western Reserve freshman place kicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH) went a perfect six-for-six in point after attempts. Spartan junior defensive end Brian Calderone (Broadview Hts., OH) had 2.5 tackles for a loss [5 yards] and freshman defensive back Ethan Atchley (Chesterland, OH) grabbed his first collegiate interception to lead the defense.
