CASE 52, GALLAUDET 13...
CLEVELAND, OH (September 29, 2007) -
Case Western Reserve University improved to 5-0 on the year with a 52-13 victory at Gallaudet University this afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Spartans, who have scored 40-plus points three times this season, have a bye week and then travel to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA for their University Athletic Association opener and to play for the Academic Bowl on October 13 [12:00 p.m.]. 
Case Western Reserve sophomore receiver Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH-pictured) led the Spartan offense with 10 catches for 211 yards. Cowdrick, who has a team and UAA leading 591 receiving yards this season, had eight catches for 170 yards in the first half alone. Junior defensive end Brian Calderone (Broadview Heights, OH) and senior defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) led the Case Western Reserve defense with seven tackles each.
Sophomore receiver Ryan Kolesar (Mentor, OH) gave the Spartans an early cushion with two consecutive touchdown grabs in the first half. Kolesar caught a 14-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Dan Whalen at 5:11 in the first quarter and another 14-yarder from Whalen at 12:52 in the second quarter giving Case Western Reserve a 21-0 lead. Whalen finished the day 11-of-14 for 194 yards.
Gallaudet [2-3] junior receiver Kevin Alley had a 45-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Jason Coleman with a little over a minute left [1:09] in the first half to make the score 24-7 at the intermission.
Spartan sophomore running back Corey Checkan, who had a one-yard touchdown run at 12:47 in first quarter, put the game [31-7] away with another one from six yards out with 9:36 left in the third quarter. Checkan has a team-high six touchdowns this season.
Two-time University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week and Spartan freshman place kicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH) was perfect [7-of-7] on point after attempts and hit a 19-yard field goal on the day. Coffey currently leads the team in scoring with 45 points this year.
