SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2007

CLEVELAND, OH (September 22, 2007)
- For the first time since 1994, the coveted Baird Brothers Trophy has a home in Cleveland.

The Case Western Reserve University Spartans (4-0, first time since 1985) made history tonight, as they defeated the College of Wooster (0-3) 30-17 in front of a packed-crowd at Case Field. The last time Case defeated Wooster was in 1994 when the Spartans cruised to a 40-23 victory over the Fighting Scots.

Despite the offense turning the ball over four times, the Spartan defense was able to hold the Fighting Scots to only nine first downs and 173 yards of total offense en route to their fourth straight win of the season.

Wooster took an early 7-0 lead after Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) was picked off by Trey Simmerman, which led to an easy eight-yard touchdown pass for Austin Holter.

However, the Spartans battled back in the second quarter, when Whalen led the offense down the field 74 yards, leading to a two-yard Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA) touchdown run to give Case a narrow 13-10 lead.

The second half was all Case, as the Spartans shutout the Scots in the third quarter and outscored them 17-7 in the second half to ensure the 30-17 victory.

Whalen, the reigning University Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week, finished the game with 286 yards through the air on 21-of-40 passing, with one touchdown and one interception. The Willoughby South product also rushed the ball 16 times for 83 yards in the victory.

Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH-pictured) led all receivers with nine receptions for 103 yards. Cowdrick has caught 27 passes for 380 yards on the year – both tops in the University Athletic Association.

The Spartan defense was stellar this evening, as senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) finished the evening with 14 tackles, two of which were for a loss of nine yards. Senior defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) finished the game with 12 tackles, while sophomore linebacker Jeff Brown (North Olmsted, OH) finished with nine tackles and three sacks.

The Spartans totaled 24 first downs on the night and had 452 yards of total offense. In four games this season, the Spartan offense has totaled over 400 yards in every contest.

The Case football team will be on the road for their next game, as they head to our nation’s capital to face the Bisons from Gallaudet University. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Hotchkiss Field.
