CLEVELAND, OH (September 8, 2007) -
Despite an hour-long lightning delay, Case Western Reserve University defeated Denison University, 45-6, in its home opener at Case Field. 
Sophomore quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) led the Spartans to an early lead in the first quarter, after he hit sophomore wide receiver Ryan Kolesar (Mentor, OH) with a 30-yard pass to give the team a 7-0 lead with 13:15 remaining in the first quarter. Kolesar finished the game with six catches for 118 yards and one touchdown, while Whalen completed 17-of-29 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns, one coming on a five-yard run in the first quarter.
Sophomore wide receiver Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH) duplicated his efforts from last week against Oberlin College, as he caught eight passes for 122 yards against Denison. Cowdrick’s longest catch came in the first quarter when he and Whalen connected for a 40-yard gain.
The Case Western Reserve defense was stellar for the second week in-a-row, holding the Big Red to 143 yards of total offense and only one touchdown. The Spartan defense forced three turnovers, including a third quarter interception by junior defensive back Luiz Goncalves (Franklin, PA- pictured) that he returned 53 yards for a touchdown. Senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) and junior linebacker Ben Chlebina (Uniontown, OH) each had five tackles in the victory.
The Spartans had 505 yards of total offense in the victory and totaled 25 first downs, while holding the Big Red to only six.
The Spartan’s next game will be a week from today against Kenyon College at McBride Field at 1:00 p.m.
