CLEVELAND, OH (September 1, 2007) -
Case Western Reserve University sophomore quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) completed 17-of-28 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns and junior running back Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA) rushed 20 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-15 season-opener win at Oberlin College. The Spartan defense forced four turnovers and held the Yeomen to just 22 rushing yards [181 total offensive yards] on the day.
Case senior defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH-pictured) had a team-high seven tackles. Junior defensive back Luiz Goncalves (Franklin, PA), senior linebacker Mike Tuertscher (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore linebacker Jeff Brown (North Olmsted, OH) each had an interception and sophomore defensive back Bobby Bott (Grafton, OH) recovered a fumble. Spartan sophomore wide receiver Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH) added eight catches for 122 yards.
Senior defensive back Michael Evans (Penfield, NY) gave Oberlin an early 6-0 lead with a 60-yard interception return at 7:23 in the first quarter. Checkan had a three-yard touchdown run at 1:08 in the first quarter to put the Spartans up 7-6. Whalen threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter to give Case a 20-6 halftime lead. He found freshman receiver Shaun Nicely (Willoughby, OH) from 27 yards out at 9:12 and connected with freshman receiver Brain Webster (Southfield, MI) on a four-yard pass with 3:07 left in the half.
Checkan then recorded a two-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, at 12:04 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach [27-6]. Oberlin ended its scoring with a 10-yard touchdown from junior running back R.V. Carroll (Perry, OH) at 10:13 in the third and a safety with nine seconds left in the game. Spartan freshman Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH), who went 3-for-4 in point after attempts, hit a 22-yard field goal at 6:06 in the third and senior running back Brendan Jones (Sudbury, MA) had a seven-yard touchdown run with 3:25 left in the game to complete the Spartans' scoring.
Case will host Denison University this Saturday in its home opener at 7:00 p.m. at Case Field.
