SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2006

CLEVELAND, OH (November 11, 2006)
- It was senior day for eleven Case Western Reserve University Spartans, but sophomore DE/K Brian Calderone-pictured (Broadview Heights, OH) played the game of his life, and stole the show. Calderone scored 15 of Case’s 29 points, scoring a touchdown, three point-after-touchdowns, and two field goals, as Case trounced the visiting Washington & Lee University Generals, 27-9.

Case (5-5, 1-2 UAA) got the ball first, and five minutes and 21 seconds later, the Spartans went up 7-0 before the Generals’ (7-3, 5-1 ODAC) offense ever took the field. Spartan senior wide receiver Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) caught freshman quarterback Dan Whalen’s (Willoughby, OH) 11-yard touchdown pass with 9:39 left in the first quarter. Brian Calderone scored his first point of the game, kicking the extra point. Case led 7-0.

Dan Whalen took all of Case’s snaps, throwing for 119 yards, completing 11 of 22 passes, while also running for 15 yards on 7 carries, but lost one fumble. Senior running back James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) had a memorable Senior Day performance rushing 32 times for 93 yards. Case’s receiving leader, Brenner, caught 7 passes for 67 yards, one touchdown, and one lost fumble. Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH), another senior wide receiver, caught three passes for 27 yards.

On defense, Brian Calderone wreaked havoc on the Generals’ offense all game long. Calderone compiled 14 total tackles, six of which were for a loss, one forced fumble, one fumble returned for a touchdown, four sacks, and a pass break-up. Senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH), showed up repeatedly on the stat sheet, as usual. Brew made 10 total tackles, 3.5 of those tackles were for a loss, and broke up one pass. Senior linebacker Nick Decesare (Westlake, OH) had seven total tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass break-up. Senior DT Jason Fronczak (Coraopolis, PA) had seven total tackles, and a forced fumble. Senior S Chris Kerr (Cambridge, OH) recorded one solo tackle.

Brian Calderone’s kick sailed through the uprights with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter to increase Case’s lead to 10-0. After Dan Whalen was called for intentional grounding on fourth down, Washington & Lee went 50 yards in nine plays, which setup Generals kicker Ben Long’s 24-yard field goal. With five minutes to go in the first half, Decesare forced Generals quarterback R.J. Varner to fumble, which Brian Calderone picked up, and scampered 32 yards for a Spartans touchdown. The score stayed in Case’s favor to halftime, 17-3.

The Generals got the ball first in the second quarter. However, it took only three Generals offensive plays for Spartans safety John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) to make an interception, which he returned to the Washington & Lee four-yard line. Case could not capitalize on the good field position, however, settling for Brian Calderone’s 22-yard field goal. However, Case’s defense added another touchdown of its own when freshman CB Bobby Bott (Grafton, OH) returned an interception of R.J. Varner 36 yards for the Spartans’ final touchdown of the game. J.C. Campbell’s four-yard touchdown run accounted for the Generals’ only touchdown of the game. Washington & Lee’s two-point conversion attempt failed, making the final score 27-9.
