CLEVELAND, OH (October 28, 2006) -
Case Western Reserve University freshman quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) led the Spartans on a 14 play, 74-yard game winning drive with two minutes left as Case defeated the University of Chicago, 10-9, at Case Field.
The Spartans (4-4, 1-2 UAA) trailed Chicago (2-5, 0-3 UAA) 9-3, but got the ball back with 2:08 left in the game. Case sophomore running back Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA) finished off the game winning drive with a two-yard run with 24 seconds left in the game.
Whalen finished the game 13 of 31 for 159 yards with three second half interceptions. Senior running back James Rosenbury (Draper, UT) had 20 carries for 99 yards, and senior wide receiver Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) added four catches for 87 yards to lead the Spartan offense.
On defense, senior linebacker Tom Brew-pictured (Mentor, OH) led three Spartan players in double digits in tackles with 20. Sophomore defensive end Brian Calderone (Broadview Heights, OH) added 13 tackles and junior defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) had 11 tackles.
Maroon sophomore running back Chuck Little capitalized on a Case fumble in the first quarter. Little finished off a four play, 14-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run with 2:27 left in the quarter. Chicago’s last score of the game came in the second quarter, when junior linebacker Tony Insalaco sacked Whalen in his own endzone with 12:41 on the clock in the second quarter.
Case finally got on the board in the second half when sophomore kicker Brian Calderone (Broadview Hts., OH) kicked a 24-yard field goal with 10:13 on the clock in the third quarter to bring the Spartans within six, 9-3. The Spartan defense held the Maroons scoreless in the last 30 minutes.
