WASHINGTON 13, CASE 6...
CLEVELAND, OH (October 21, 2006) -
Case Western Reserve University junior linebacker Mike Tuertscher-pictured (Cincinnati, OH) recorded a game-high 11 tackles (7 solo, 4 assists) and forced three fumbles in the Spartans’ 13-6 loss this afternoon at Washington University in St. Louis. Case (3-4, 0-2 UAA) will play their third and final University Athletic Association game this Saturday (Oct. 28) at Case Field against the University of Chicago (12:00 p.m.).
Washington (5-3, 2-0 UAA) senior running back DaRonne Jenkins scored the game’s first touchdown on a two-yard run at 5:02 in the first quarter. Jenkins then fumbled on the Spartans’ one-yard line, and senior offensive lineman Matt Keleshian recovered it in the end zone for Washington’s second touchdown of the quarter (0:15). The point after was blocked by Case junior defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH) as Washington led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Spartan offense turned the ball over three times in the first half (interception, two fumbles), but after a scoreless second quarter, only trailed the Bears 13-0 at the intermission.
Case senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) recovered a Washington fumble at the Bears’ 30-yard line in the third (11:07) to set up the Spartans’ first score of the game. Freshman quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) hit senior wide receiver Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) from 18 yards out at 9:51. Brenner finished the day with 8 receptions for 69 yards. Case missed the point after, and neither team would score again in the quarter, making it 13-6 Washington at the end of the third. The Spartans’ fourth turnover of the game would prove costly as a 13 play, 62-yard drive was ended at 8:52 in the fourth quarter when Whalen threw his second interception of the game at the Bears’ nine-yard line. Case had the ball on the Bear 22-yard line with 1:35 remaining in the game, but Whalen just overthrew senior wide receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH) in the end zone on fourth down.
Brew and sophomore linebacker Ben Chlebina (Uniontown, OH) added nine tackles a piece and Whalen finished the day 13-of-20 for 106 yards.
