CLEVELAND, OH (September 23, 2006)
- The College of Wooster won the battle of the unbeatens this afternoon as they topped Case Western Reserve University 21-7 at John P. Papp Stadium in Wooster, Ohio. Case (3-1) will next host Ursinus College on October 7 at 12:00 p.m.

Case freshman quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) completed 18-of-35 passes (one interception) for 235 yards, and senior wide receiver Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) had 11 catches for 126 yards to lead the offense. Spartan junior defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, OH-pictured) had 14 tackles and senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) 13 to lead the defense. Freshman linebacker Jeff Brown (North Olmsted, OH) also added 10 tackles and grabbed his first collegiate interception.

Wooster (3-0) scored the only points of the first quarter at 6:44 when freshman defensive back Matt DeGrand blocked Case sophomore Brian Calderone’s (Broadview Hts., OH) punt in the end zone and senior wide receiver Aaron Gertz fell on the ball. The Fighting Scots then made it 14-0 early in the second quarter (12:46) when senior quarterback Justin Schafer found sophomore wide receiver Joe Francescangeli from six yards out.

Schafer began the third quarter with a 15 yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Luke McCann to put Wooster up 21-0 at 10:26. That would be the end of the Fighting Scots’ scoring for the day. Case junior quarterback Angelo Mirando (Jefferson, OH) entered the game in the fourth quarter and finished off a nine play, 50 yard drive with a six yard run for the Spartans’ only score with 2:29 left in the game.
