CLEVELAND, OH (September 16, 2006) -
Case Western Reserve University freshman quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH-pictured) passed for 200 plus yards for the third consecutive game and the Spartans won their third straight this evening 43-13 against Kenyon College at Case Field. The Spartans remain undefeated on the year at 3-0 as Kenyon drops to 1-2. Case will travel to the College of Wooster this Saturday (Sept. 23) for a 1:00 p.m. game.
Whalen completed 11-of-26 for 203 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two touchdowns in the game. Senior receiver Josh Dudek (Kenton, OH) had five catches for 84 yards and junior running back Brendan Jones (Sudbury, MA) had 13 carries for 69 yards to also lead the offensive attack. On defense, senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH) had eight tackles and two sacks.
The Spartans took a 22-0 advantage into the half as Whalen threw for two touchdowns and ran one in. In the first quarter, he found sophomore running back Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA) from two yards out at 9:34 and ran one in from six yards out at 3:49 to put his team up 13-0 at the end of the first. The Case defense then put two points on the board when senior linebacker Nick Decesare (Westlake, OH) sacked Kenyon’s quarterback for a safety at 13:44. Then Whalen struck again on a 65 yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) to give Case the 22-0 advantage at the intermission. Brenner finished the game with two catches for 78 yards.
In the third quarter, Whalen ran one in from 11 yards out for the second Spartan rushing touchdown on the night, pushing Case ahead 29-0 at 9:20. The Spartans then scored twice in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Angelo Mirando (Jefferson, OH) found senior receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH) at 14:00 for a 12 yard touchdown pass (36-0 Case). Kenyon then put their first points on the board (36-7) at 13:21 on sophomore running back Javier Arbolaez’s 81 yard kickoff return. Case’s Checkan than ran for his second touchdown of the game at 5:03 from one yard out to make the score 43-7. Kenyon ended the scoring with two minutes remaining when junior quarterback Rafael Sanchez had a one yard touchdown run.
