SPARTAN FOOTBALL—2006


CLEVELAND, OH (September 9, 2006)
- Case Western Reserve University freshman quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) completed 17-of-32 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns as Case improved to 2-0 on the year with a 27-14 win at Denison University (0-2). The Spartans will host Kenyon College this Saturday (Sept. 16) at 6:00 p.m.

Denison senior running back Fred Lee scored first at 12:30 with a 15 yard touchdown run to put his team up 7-0 in the first, but Case answered with three straight scores. Senior linebacker Tom Brew (Mentor, OH - pictured) sacked Denison sophomore quarterback Jordan Linck for a safety at 8:32, freshman quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Josh Dudek (Kenton, OH) at 6:30, and sophomore running back Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA) rushed for a six yard touchdown to put the Spartans up 15-7 at 4:30. Lee then ended the first quarter with a one yard touchdown run, his second of the quarter, bringing the Big Red within one, 15-14.

In the second quarter, Brew sacked Linck again in the end zone at 6:22 for his second safety of the game, and sophomore kicker Brian Calderone (Broaview Hts., OH) kicked a 20 yard field goal with no time remaining on the clock to give Case a 20-14 lead at the half. Brew finished the game with a team high 10 tackles and senior linebacker Nick Decesare (Westlake, OH) added nine.

The only points scored in the second half came in the third quarter when senior receiver Joe Brenner (Lititz, PA) caught a 24 yard touchdown pass from Whalen to give the Spartans the 27-14 victory. Senior receiver Matt Skolnicki (Lorain, OH) led all Case receivers with five catches for 82 yards.
